By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize is holding the 92nd edition of the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic on Holy Saturday at 5:50 am after two years of a COVID-19 forced break.
The Cross Country is held annually on Holy Saturday under the regulations of the International Cycling Union and the CFB.
“The race will start at BTL Park, Newtown Barrack, Belize City at 5:50 a.m. with a lead out from starting point unto Freetown Road, across Belcan Bridge unto Central American Blvd, Lord Ridge Cemetery unto the George Price Highway, where the official start takes place in front of Leslie’s Imports,” said the CBF.
The race goes to San Ignacio and back to Belize City a total of approximately 142 miles.
The CFB said when the race gets to the Santa Elena roundabout, it takes a right to La Loma Luz Boulevard, then moves to the Joseph Andrew Drive towards Savannah St., passes the Burns Avenue junction, turns left to Hudson Street into King St and left to George Price Highway, crosses the Hawkesworth Bridge, continues straight on the George Price Highway to Belize City.
Upon arriving in Belize City, it passes through the Lord Ridge Cemetery, turns left on the Hand’s roundabout to Central American Boulevard, over the Belcan Bridge to Princess Margaret Drive, passing by the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the Marion Jones Sporting Complex to Newtown Barracks finishing in front of the Digi Park.
Guatemalan Julio Padilla won the last edition in 2019. Digi’s Giovanni Lovell, who now rides for G-Flow was the first Belizean to cross the finishing line, coming in fifth place overall.
