By Hugh O’Brien: Earlier today United Democratic Party (UDP) Leader and Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, sent out his “deepest sympathies to the Campos family” as news of the death of Ruben Campos flooded social media and saddened party loyalists.

In a social media post, Barrow said “The United Democratic Party thanks you for your service as a UDP stalwart serving the Orange Walk North and Orange Walk South Constituency with distinction as Area Representative from 1984-93 & 1993-98. As Minister of Health and Sports, National Coordination and Mobilization (NEMO), Education Minister of State, your contributions to the development of our Nation were tremendous.”

According to Barrow while his passion for service grew, he (Barrow) would attend every House Sitting for 7 years before he got elected to serve in the House. The UDP Party Leader noted that “It would be rare that Minister Campos was not there in support of the UDP Government. Minister Campos would give me a copy of the House orders of the day as we sat in the gallery, me studying the art of the debate and parliamentary procedures and him mentoring me during the breaks to focus on the youth, music and sports as the key factors for National development and a successful political career.”

“Minister Ruben Campos was a gentle political giant who along with Hon. Elodio Aragon Senior and other Party stalwarts established the UDP as a force to be reckoned with in Orange Walk North which had been a PUP stronghold for 23 consecutive years (1961-1984) until Minister Campos first won the seat for the UDP in 1984,” noted Barrow.

“Your selfless dedication to Party for Country will forever be celebrated as the benchmark for a political life of service. Thank you Negrito.”

“May your soul have eternal rest,” ended the release.
