By Benjamin Flowers: Police are awaiting lab results to determine if intoxication was a factor in a road traffic accident in the rural Belize district Yesterday, that claimed the life of 23-year-old Sergio Eck.

The accident took place at Buttercup Estate outside Burrell Boom to Scotland Halfmoon, where Eck reportedly lost control of the vehicle and it flipped several times.

Riding along with him at the time were 25-year-old Roshane Flowers; 22-year-old Kia Flowers and 16-year-old Karrie Flowers.

Eck received severe head and body injuries and died on the scene while the passengers were all admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, head of communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, explained that samples were taken from Eck’s body to determine his blood alcohol content at the time of the incident and that authorities are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination. Yearwood also said that the other passengers were not severely injured during the accident.
“I was informed that [the injuries] were non-life-threatening. But we know that they had various head and body injuries,” Yearwood said.

He added that the passengers have all since given statements regarding the accident to the police.
