FFB calls Belize Men’s National Team for Concacaf Nations League, leading goalkeeper Woodrow West left out

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has called the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) to report to camp to prepare for the Concacaf National League games on Wednesday, May 25, but has left out Belize’s leading goalkeeper Woodrow West.

West represents security in goal which the younger goalkeepers cannot yet provide because they don’t have the experience he has having played at the top level for several years. There is a gap between West and the younger keepers that did not exist before in the Charlie Slusher-Shane Orio-Woodrow West eras. Way before Charlie was on his way out, Shane was already playing top level and the same happened afterward when West was called to the BMNT. In fact, the three were on the BMNT at one point.

Charles Tillett, who is reserve goalkeeper to Woodrow at Verdes, and Isaac Castillo are still not at West’s level despite their talent. Blame COVID-19 which cut the number of international games they could have played by now or just the generational gap, but West is at this point indispensable to the Belize Men’s National Team.

Tillett, Castillo, and Dyck will get there but they need the guidance of a mentor that the coaches on their own cannot provide. So, even if it is just for transition’s sake, West has to be called to the BMNT.

The FFB already punished Woodrow by not calling him to the last BMNT game against Cuba in March after a video surfaced in which he behaved vociferously with his girlfriend after being threatened, according to what he said, by a couple of men at a restaurant in Belmopan. At the time, West said his girlfriend was right in trying to make him avoid a confrontation.

The FFB called the players to report to training camp on Wednesday, May 25, for the Concacaf Nations League which gets underway on Thursday June 2. Belize will play four of its six matches against the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and French Guiana, in June and the remaining two in March 2023.

The players called are:

Goalkeepers Earl Dyck, Charles Tillett, and Isaac Castillo.

Defenders: Everal Trapp, Collin Westby, Donnel Arzu, Asrel Sutherland, Norman Anderson, and Jose Urbina.

Midfielders: Denmark Casey Jr. Warren Moss, Darrel Myvett, Tony Rocha, Nana Yaw Mensah, Angelo Capello, Eldon Reneau, and Jovaunn Ramos.

Forwards: Deon McCaulay, Krisean Lopez, Horace Avila, Carlos Bernardez, and Jesse August.

The head coach is David Pérez from Spain.
