By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Praderas Huastecas is the second Mexican livestock company interested in buying Belizean cattle.
“Yesterday (Tuesday) we had new Mexican potential buyers visiting cattle producers and expressing interest in purchasing beef. They came for a familiarization tour and are expected to come back,” said Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Officer, and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
Esquivel said the representatives of Praderas Huastecas came from Tampico, Mexico.
Praderas Huastecas describes itself as a world-leading company dedicated to the production and commercialization of the highest quality beef. The company says it sells to wholesalers in Mexico and exports beef to 23 countries.
Prior to this visit, Su Karne has been the only Mexican company buying livestock from Belizean producers since early last year.
Just today Wednesday, Su Karne cattle trucks crossed the border into Mexico with 261 heads of cattle weighing 148,312 pounds of live beef bought from cattle producers in Orange Walk. The shipment had a value of approximately BZ$315,000.00.
So far this year, Su Karne has bought 1701 head of livestock valued at just over BZ$2 million from Belizean cattle farmers.
