UDP condemns “wasteful spending” of taxpayers’ funds on BTB’s international music and food festival

By BBN Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement condemning the “wasteful spending” of taxpayers’ funds on the upcoming international music and food festival that the BTB is hosting in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye next month.

The UDP says that Ambergris Caye already has a successful, internationally recognized, and privately funded festival; the International Costa Maya Festival.

“ The International Costa Maya Festival does not cost taxpayers [any money] and achieves the objectives that the Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler highlighted at the Music and Food Festival launch. Mahler’s fest is a slap in the face of the tourism industry stakeholders who have struggled for years to keep Costa Maya alive,” the UDP noted.

The UDP says that for this festival, Belizean artists are getting less than 5% of the budget.

“We urge the government to redirect that same sum towards true national events that need financial support. The Carnival Road March is on life support this year with less than a handful of senior bands competing due to lack of funding,” the UDP statement added.
