By BBN Staff: The Supreme Cort has dismissed a case against the state filed by the Human Rights Commission of Belize (HRCB), over alleged human rights violations of seven Cban nationals who were detained for entering Belize illegally.

Back in March the Cubans were caught during their illegal entry attempt and fined $1,005 each which they paid. They were then remanded to the Belize Central Prison until an order to leave could be executed. Two attempts have been made to extradite them but the HRCB filed a case on their behalf seeking asylum for them to remain in Belize.

Justice Lisa Shoman handed down the verdict on Monday, stating that the state acted within the law when the Cubans were detained. She also made special provision for the minors, who are still in the state’s custody, ensuring that they must get access to their mother until they are reunited.

Justice Shoman also noted that in the case of the pregnant Cuban woman, that her well-being lies in the hands of the state.
