Hurricane Blas forms in the Eastern Pacific

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that Tropical storm Blas located in the Eastern North Pacific has strengthened to a hurricane.

Hurricane Blas is the 2nd named storm of the Eastern Pacific season and is located about 300 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph with higher gusts.

The NHC notes that additional strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours followed by gradual weakening by the end of the week.

The NHC is also closely monitoring a disturbance off the coast of Central America.

A large area of showers and thunderstorms off the coast of Guatemala and El Salvador are associated with a trough of low pressure.

This system could become a tropical depression during the next couple of days.

Heavy rains are possible across portions of El Salvador, Guatemala, and southeastern Mexico during the next days.
