81-year-old Dr. Anthony Fauci, US President’s senior advisor on the pandemic, battling mild bout of COVID-19

By Benjamin Flowers: Dr. Anthony Fauci, a senior adviser to the United States President on the pandemic, is currently battling a mild case of COVID-19, ABC reports.

Fauci, 81, tested positive on Thursday, via rapid test. Dr. Fauci is the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

NIAID issued a statement following Fauci’s positive test result, explaining that he had recently attended an event at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where the college renamed the science center the Anthony S. Fauci Integrated Science Complex. Fauci was maskless at the event.

“Dr. Fauci will isolate and continue to work from his home,” the statement said. “Dr. Fauci will follow the COVID-19 guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and medical advice from his physician and return to the NIH when he tests negative.”

NIAID added that Dr. Fauci has not had close contact with President Joe Biden or any other senior US officials.

He is still scheduled to testify before the Senate Health Committee on Thursday, June 23, but will now do so virtually.

Dr. Fauci is reportedly fully vaccinated and has had two booster shots. He is additionally taking Pfizer’s antiviral treatment Paxlovid.
