By BBN Staff: A Belizean/American visiting from the US has been remanded to prison after being accused of pulling knives on his mother and assaulting his younger brother.
Twenty-five-year-old Saleick Abdullah appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, answering to one count of aggravated assault against his mother and one count of common assault against his brother.
Abdullah, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution objected to bail on several grounds, including the prevalence of the crime, the way it was committed, and the fact that Abdullah is a flight risk, having only returned to Belize for a visit.
The Magistrate agreed and he was remanded until August.
The allegation against him is that Abdullah and his family got into an altercation because his mother refused to give him $5 to buy marijuana, and the altercation escalated to the point where his mother said she would call the police. When she tried to do so he reportedly grabbed two knives off a kitchen counter and made advances at her. He also threatened to break his little brother’s jaw during the exchange.
