Study finds monkeypox mutating rapidly as it spreads

Posted: Monday, June 27, 2022. 2:20 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Around the world, health experts are monitoring the increase in reported cases of monkeypox.

Researchers in Portugal published a study in Nature Medicine noting that this strain of monkeypox appears to be more transmissible, the Financial Times report.

João Paulo Gomes from Portugal’s National Institute of Health in Lisbon said that the current outbreak was caused by a virus that presents more mutations than expected.

“It was quite unexpected to find so many mutations in the 2022 monkeypox virus,” Gomes said. “In fact, considering the genome characteristics of this type of virus, no more than one or two mutations are likely to emerge each year.”

At this time, many cities are expanding access to vaccinations to men who have sex with men or have multiple partners in the last 14 days.

Monkeypox is transmitted from human to human through close contact, which may include sex. However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.
