Belize City men remanded to prison for illegal gun and ammunition

Posted: Thursday, June 30, 2022. 10:58 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Two Belize City residents were remanded to the Belize Central Prison this week over firearms offenses.

Twenty-five-year-old Randy Petillo and 29-year-old Douglas Carter appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, charged jointly with kept firearm without a license and kept ammunition without a license. Both men pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Petillo also faced three traffic offenses, for driving a vehicle that had no license, no license plates, and for driving without a valid driver’s license. He pleaded not guilty to all of those charges.

Due to the nature of the firearms offenses, the men could not receive bail at the magistrate level and were sent to prison until August 26. The option to apply for bail via the Supreme Court through the assistance of an attorney will be available to them later.

Police reportedly found the men inside a vehicle on Balan Street on Tuesday, June 28, with a pistol containing seven live rounds of .9mm ammunition.
