Migrants’ ‘American dream’ can be a nightmare

Posted: Thursday, June 30, 2022. 11:11 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, authorities in San Antonio, Texas confirmed that 53 migrants were found dead inside a truck. The migrants had been trapped inside under the sweltering heat in Texas. The victims are believed to be mostly from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Every year, thousands of Central Americans take the journey in hopes of finding the “American dream” in the USA. Most of them face hardships in their home countries.

Carlos Carrasco, a resident of Izucar in Matamoros, Mexico says that it is tough living in Mexico. Carrasco had migrated to the U.S. when he was young and worked at a pizzeria, Reuters report.

“It’s tough here in Mexico. There’s violence, unemployment, and health issues. Everyone who goes to the U.S. goes in search of the American Dream,” he said.

Locals say some villages have completely emptied out as more people take the journey in search of a better life.

In their home towns, they are faced with unemployment and low wages.

But some families say that they plan to stay in their home countries without much but together.

While many make it safely across the Mexico- US border, data shows that in 2021, 650 migrants died trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States.
