Court rules that man charged for threatening words and damage to property must undergo psychiatric evaluation before standing trial

By BBN Staff: The Belize City Magistrate’s Court has ruled that 30-year-old Ivan Usher must undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is mentally fit to stand trial.

Usher appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with one count of threatening words and one count of damage to property.

In court, he began talking consistently, jumping from one topic to the other which had no relevance to the case, despite being cautioned by Magistrate Baja Shoman to keep quiet.

Magistrate Shoman believed that Usher was not understanding the court proceedings and explained to Usher that he would be sent to the Belize Central Prison where a doctor would do an evaluation on him and make a report to the court on his mental capacity.

Usher was denied bail and remanded until August 2.

The allegations against him are that on Monday, June 27, he threatened to kill a woman and also caused damage to a $30 plastic chair along with a $350 glass window.
