Ex-employee of Coye Funeral Parlor pleads guilty to stealing over $1,400 – says he gave the money to a homeless man

By BBN Staff: In a rare show of conscience, a man that had gotten away with burglary, turned himself in to police and plead guilty to the charge in court.

Belize City resident, 27-year-old Alexander Holder appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with a single count of burglary. The charges are with respect to $1,473.06, stolen from his former workplace, Coye’s Funeral Parlor.

Authorities had no clue who committed the burglary due to the poor quality of the surveillance footage of the incident which occurred on Wednesday, June 16. However, with the guilty plea the case was easy to close.

Holder had quit his job at the funeral parlor and his last day of work was Friday, July 1st. After confessing that he was the one who committed the burglary, he explained that he had asked his boss for a raise of pay several times, but it was continually denied. He added that he was stressed out and made a mistake, and pleaded with the court for leniency.

However, a conviction for a burglary charge carries a minimum sentence of 7 years in prison. The Magistrate considered various factors including his guilty plea and cooperation with authorities, and gave him a sentence of only four years.

When asked what he did with the stolen cash, since none of it was ever recovered, Holder said that he gave it all to a homeless man.
