World Health Organization declares Monkeypox a global health emergency

Posted: Saturday, July 23, 2022. 8:52 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Monkeypox, a global health emergency, BBC reports.

This is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a surge in cases.

As of today, over 16,000 cases have been confirmed from 75 countries.

WHO officials say 5 people have died as a result of the Monkeypox outbreak.

The only other 2 health emergencies are COVID-19 and Polio.

“The WHO’s assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region, where we assess the risk as high,” said WHO director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
