Agriculture Minister Jose Mai in Brazil for National Coconut Festival 2022

By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai is in Brazil this week, attending the National Coconut Fair (Fenacoco 2022).

Mai is participating in the event, being held in the City of Fortaleza from August 10-12, along with a delegation of eight businessmen, to learn about the logistics of commercial production of coconut products and to promote Belize’s coconut industry in Brazil. Mai is also set to acquire machinery and equipment that will be used to further develop the coconut industry in Belize.

During their visit, Mai and the delegation will take a trip to Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, the research unit of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, for them to experience the institution’s advanced technical knowledge in the coconut industry.

Mai, who has expressed interest in strengthening relations with Brazil, will be heading to the Embrapa office in Fortaleza, to discuss future cooperation projects.

In August 2021, Mai and his Ministry engaged coconut farmers to find out the industry’s needs and see what support could be given to them to enhance the industry’s output. Mai noted at that time that increasing production was a key focus of the ministry to grow the coconut industry’s economic viability.

His trip to Brazil is a testament to the overall goal to take Belize’s coconut industry to the next level.
