By Benjamin Flowers: The University of Belize Association of Student Governments (ASG) is calling on students to attend a number of safety assemblies planned for the next two weeks, following the death of 17-year-old graphic designer Leroy Cus.
Cus was found dead on Wednesday night in Belmopan. Reports are that he was fatally stabbed in the commission of a robbery.
The ASG said that, while Cus was not a student of UB, the manner in which he was killed has a major impact on students, who no longer feel safe traveling at night.
“Mr. Cus’s death has traumatized students at UB and also entire families across the nation,” the ASG said. “This is another eye-opener to many, reminding us of how risky it can be to simply walk home from a bus terminal.”
The ASG said that the safety assemblies are being held in collaboration with the school administration and will be held on all school campuses.
Students are urged to participate and share their ideas on what can be done to ensure the safety of those traveling to and from campuses, as well as the wider community.
