Taiwan thanks its allies for joint statement on peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait

By Benjamin Flowers: The Republic of China (Taiwan) has thanked its diplomatic allies for signing a joint statement calling for peace and security in the Taiwan Strait and beyond, following military actions around Taiwan conducted by the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) issued the thank you statement today to Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, Haiti, the MarshallIslands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, St Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu, for the statement which was published Tuesday on the website of the Permanent Mission of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to the United Nations.

The 12 signatories to the statement said that they were “gravely concerned” by China’s militaries around Taiwan, and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and the rules-based international order. The countries said that China’s military exercises escalated tensions, undermined regional security, and also negatively affected international trade and transportation.

The MOFA explained that the joint statement not only addressed what it referred to as “premeditated attempts to undermine the cross-strait status quo and regional peace and stability with threatening military intimidation,” but also praised Taiwan for its calm response to those threats.

The Taiwanese Embassy in Belize also issued a special thank you to the Government of Belize on its Facebook page, thanking the country for its display of true friendship.

“Taiwan will continuously uphold the universal values of democracy and freedom with Belize and jointly defend the rule-based international system while opposing China’s will to undermine regional peace and security with military provocative actions,” the Embassy said.
