By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Taiwan handed over US$750,000 as a third disbursement under the Belize-Taiwan 2022 Bilateral Cooperation Grant on August 22.
The Government of Belize Press Office said Prime Minister John Briceño, who is Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment, received the US$750,000 grant from David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
“The generous financial support received from the Taiwanese Government through this grant program will support several initiatives aimed at attaining sustainable development goals and will see the upliftment of the people of Belize,” said the GOB Press Office statement.
In particular, the grant will allow the procurement of a new well rig for the Ministry of Rural Development, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government. The rig will facilitate the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Unit in digging wells effectively and efficiently for villages countrywide that do not have a water system.
“The new well rig will provide needed water access for 22 additional rural communities across the country and will allow for the effective maintenance of the 108 rural water systems currently in place, which are crucial for improving the quality of life of the residents of villages,” said the GOB Press Office.
On August 3, the Taiwanese Ambassador had presented the second disbursement of US$950,000 to the Prime Minister for several initiatives, including internet for 197 schools.
