Santa Cruz cooperative in Toledo receives sewing machines from Rapid Response to COVID-19 and 2020 Floods in Belize project

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Ten sewing machines were handed over today to the Santa Cruz Hibiscus Mayan Art and Crafts Cooperative in the Toledo District,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

“The event was made successful through the project, Cooperatives’ Rapid Response to COVID-19 and the 2020 floods in Belize.”

Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai participated in the handing over ceremonies of the Rapid Response project.

“The Co-operatives Rapid Response to COVID19 and the 2020 Floods in Belize project was undertaken by Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology (BEST) and the Department of Co-operatives with funding from the GEF Small Grants Program UNDP, Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, and Department of Co-operatives,” said Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo.

“The Santa Cruz Hibiscus Mayan Art and Crafts Cooperative, whose members are made of only women, is involved in handmade arts and craft products such as basket, cuxtal, earrings, bracelets, embroidery and the sewing of traditional clothes,” said MAFSE.

The members of the Santa Cruz cooperative planted trees to commemorate the event and to contribute to the reduction of the impact of Climate Change.

Minister Mai was accompanied at the handing over by Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Local Government Oscar Requena; MAFSE Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza; Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr Victoriano Pascual; Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo; Acting Managing Director of the Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, Michelle Longsworth; National Coordinator at GEF Small Grants Program UNDP, Leonel Requena; members of the Hibiscus Mayan Art and Crafts Cooperative; and technical officers of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Cooperatives, and Resilient Rural Belize.
