By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean basketballer Alexander Ariola has signed with the University of New Brunswick St John Seawolves.

UNB Saint John Athletics said Ariola has signed with the Seawolves basketball team for the 2022-23 varsity season as a transfer student from Briercrest College in Saskatchewan where he played for a year.

The University of New Brunswick, established in 1875, is the oldest English-language university in Canada. UNB describes itself as ‘leading research and innovation in Canada since 1785’ and as ‘Canada’s most entrepreneurial university’.

Ariola will be playing for the Seawolves while studying his Business Administration major as he did at Briercrest. He first got the break to study in Canada after starring as the regular season MVP in the 2019 Аhmаdіууа Ваѕkеtbаll Lеаguе while playing for thе Ѕaint John’s College Wіldсаtѕ.

“He chose UNB Saint John because of the diversity and the small classroom sizes which will provide quality interaction with his professors,” said UNB Saint John.

The Canadian University Athletics program said Ariola is looking forward to a great opportunity to develop as an athlete.

“Basketball means the world to me. The sport is something I take really seriously, and I just want to make the most of the time that I am able to play at my highest level. I use basketball as an outlet to clear my mind,” Ariola said.

The UNB Saint John said head coach Peter Vincent spoke with Ariola by video conference several months ago to discuss a transfer from Briercrest College and that after Ariola sent him some video files to watch, the process to transfer schools was put into motion.

“My first impression of Alex was that he had size that we desperately need, and it certainly helps he has skills to go with his height!” said coach Vincent.

The coach said he was hopeful that Ariola would help the Seawolves hold their own against teams that outsize the Seawolves.

“His ability to defend and score will be crucial to helping the team move towards success for the season. His intelligence and strong family values will help the program on and off the court,” said UNB St John.
