KHMH continues activities in celebration of its 27th anniversary

By Benjamin Flowers: This week the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) continued with activities being held in commemoration of the hospital’s 27 anniversary.

The KHMH announced today that the Accident and Emergency Department was the winner of the annual barbecue cookout competition sponsored by Quality Poultry Products, with the Accounts Department coming in second.

The KMHM also said that the COVID-19 Unit was the winner of the inter-department volleyball competition, held yesterday, Thursday, September 15.

Among the many things the hospital is celebrating, the KHMH Authority is celebrating Belize reaching the “tail end” of the pandemic, with preparations in place to close down the COVID-19 Unit.

Chair of the KHMHA Board Dr. Andre Sosa said that deaths relating to the virus are now relatively low, justifying the closure of the unit. Going forward, patients admitted for COVID-19 infection will be managed at the corresponding hospital ward that matches their most severe symptoms.

The KHMH was opened on September 18, 1995, to replace the Old Belize City Hospital as the national referral hospital.

The building was named after renowned physician Dr. Karl Heusner, who was born in Belize on September 6, 1872, to German immigrant parents.
