By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize has announced that the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, is still on to visit Belize.
On the sidelines of this week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Kagame met with Prime Minister John Briceño. Both leaders instructed their respective ambassadors in New York to agree on a new date for his visit, which will be the first by any African head of state.
The President expressed his disappointment at missing the visit originally scheduled for September 14 and 15. He was scheduled to address members of the House of Representatives and the Senate at a joint special sitting as well as students at the University of Belize; will sign agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. He will, when he makes it be conferred with the Order of Belize, Belize’s second highest national award.
The invitation was first extended during the June 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Kigali, Rwanda by Prime Minister John Briceño in recognition of his “visionary leadership and complete transformation of Rwanda, from a country devastated by genocide in 1994 to one of the fastest growing economies in Africa.”
