Tropical Storm Ian to hit Cuba; Will become a hurricane tonight

Posted: Sunday, September 25, 2022. 1:10 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Tropical Storm Ian is moving toward western Cuba where it is expected to produce heavy rains and trigger storm surges as it turns into a hurricane.

“Rapid strengthening is forecast to begin tonight. Ian is expected to become a hurricane by early Monday and reach major hurricane strength Monday night or early Tuesday before it reaches western Cuba,” the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

This afternoon, the storm was located about 570 miles southeast of the western tip of Cuba with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

The Government of Cuba has issued a hurricane warning for the Cuban provinces of Isla de Juventud, Pinar del Rio, and Artemisa while the Cayman Islands government has issued tropical storm watches for Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.

“By mid-week, the storm could cause flooding across the Florida Keys and Florida peninsula,” the NHC added.

Meteorologists predict the storm will peak at Category 4 strength over the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the next few days.
