By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, today, expressed his sympathies to the family of Jeffrey Coats, who was gunned down outside of his nightclub early this morning.
Williams, who spoke on behalf of the Belize Police Department and the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, expressed sadness at Coats’s death and said that the rampant violence plaguing the country of which Coats was a victim, will not be an issue addressed overnight.
He noted that there are politicians in the public space, using violent crime and murders to gain political mileage, but that the Department and the Ministry is committed to finding lasting solutions to the issue of crime.
“Those politicians who jump up on social media and point fingers every time there is a murder are being hypocritical and disingenuous because they know that even if they were to be elected tomorrow the problem with not stop,” Williams noted.
Meanwhile, the ComPol challenged all Belizeans to do their part in addressing the crime situation by learning to live in peace. Williams also said that the department will be doing its best to solve Coats’s murder.
“I assure the Belizean people that the police and our Ministry will continue to do our best to work with our communities to bring about safer communities for all. We are saddened by every murder and will continue to do our best to prevent this heinous crime from being committed and to bring justice to the families of those who are murdered,” Williams said.
