Hurricane Ian ravages Florida; Leaves over 2 million people without power

Posted: Thursday, September 29, 2022. 9:03 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hurricane Ian broke storm surge records as it ravaged Florida on Wednesday.

Videos and photos on social media showed floating cars, submerged buildings, and dangerous storm surges.

The powerful category 4 storm caused life-threatening flooding.

Rescue officials confirmed that during the storm, they had to conduct 30 rescue missions in East Naples, Florida.

The storm battered coastal communities for hours with ferocious winds that blew away debris, ripped down trees, set off alarms, and knocked out power lines.

The flooding also pushed water levels in some areas to record highs.

CNN reports that waters in Fort Myers are higher than they’ve ever been observed since officials began recording measurements in 1965.

In preparations for Hurricane Ian, officials had issued mandatory evacuations for over 1.75 million people.
