Belize’s robotics team wins gold at First Global Challenge 2022 robotics competition

Posted: Sunday, October 16, 2022. 2:27 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Belize High School’s robotics team made regional history this week, making Belize the first Caribbean country to place first in the prestigious First Global Challenge Robotics Competition.

The competition, held this year in Geneva, Switzerland, is formatted in Olympic-style events but instead using robots. Team Belize partnered with Switzerland, Botswana, and Lithuania both in the playoff and final rounds, and emerged undefeated in these joint team events.

As an individual team, Belize ranked 14th overall out of a total of 162 competitors.

Caribbean Loop news reports that the closest a Caribbean country has come to this level of success at the competitions was Team Jamaica’s 15th place back in 2018.

BHS’s victory is also noteworthy given the fact that the school recently ranked 50th at the First Global Challenge 2020.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) joins in congratulating the BHS team, their mentors, and everyone who supported them and enabled them to give such stellar representation at the global level.
