Youth Parliamentarians meet with members of the National Assembly

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, the members of the National Children’s Parliament were taken to the National Assembly in Belmopan for a meeting with several members of the House of Representatives.

The visit, which took place on Monday to coincide with the special sitting of the House, was a collaborative effort between the National Assembly of Belize, in collaboration with National Commission for Families and Children (NCFC), the Office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children, and UNICEF, in preparation for the 3rd annual National Children’s Parliament, which will be held on November 11.

The youth parliamentarians in attendance were Hon. Asher Torres, who will represent the Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Hon. Tomas Serrut, who will represent Orange Walk Central, Hon. Heather Leigh Stewart who will represent Orange Walk East, and Hon. Jadah Wilthshire, who will represent Belize Rural South. They were accompanied by Franisha Augustine, Shakira Sutherland, and Elena Del Cid.

The youth parliamentarians, accompanied by NCFC personnel, met with Speaker Valerie Woods and were granted a brief interview to discuss her role as Speaker as well as the work of parliament. The youth parliamentarians meet with Prime Minister John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow, and other members of parliament.

The National Assembly issued a statement following the meeting, saying that several other events are being planned and coordinated for the youth parliamentarians, which are being coordinated by the NCFC leading up to November 11, and wishing each youth representative a successful youth parliament.
