No Pirates nor referees and the Altitude vs San Pedro Pirates match had to be called off last night in Independence. Now, the Football of Federation of Belize’s (FFB) Referees Department cannot find referees for today’s Premier League of Belize’s (PLB) match in Dangriga between Wagiya and Belize City’s Port Layola.

“Now the League kya find no Referee fi Officiate the Game between WAGIYA SC n PORT LAYOLA. So they expect us to play 3 Games next week Sunday against Verdes FC, Thursday against Port n Sunday against Benque,” said Wagiya Sporting Club in a social media post on Wednesday.

“This is our Home Game that has been put off for 2 weeks which isn’t FAIR to us and still want to dictate when the Game will play.”

On Tuesday, the Head of the Referees Department Eugene Contreras sent word to the PLB General Manager Wilhelm Miguel that he couldn’t find referees for the Altitude vs San Pedro Pirates match, but also requested “the back matches” to be rescheduled.

“Since the majority of the referees work late hours and I find it very difficult to find referees for the back match between Altitude FC and San Pedro Pirates FC … the Referee Committee and the referee department request that the back matches be played on a later date when the referees can try to make themselves available,” said Contreras.

Should the game play be today it will kick off at 4:00 pm.

The match had to be called off on Sunday, October 9, due to the torrential rains caused by Hurricane Julia. Initially, Wagiya wanted to play the match last Wednesday night as a night game but the Football Federation of Belize’s Referees Department didn’t authorize the Carl Ramos Stadium’s lights. The match was then set to play tonight at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, but Wagiya managed to get that changed to the Carl Ramos as an afternoon game.

Should Wagiya, who currently have 14 points, beat the Belize City side, they would regain the fourth spot they lost last weekend to Progresso. A draw would not be good enough as Progresso now have 16 points after their scoreless draw against Benque Viejo United last night in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

The PLB fourth place is important because it earns its holders a playoff berth.

But Progresso is not the only rival Wagiya has in the fourth-place race. With three games left, Port Layola are also hoping they can win them all and miraculously if their luck is guided by the stars, land a fourth-place finish.

And while we’re at it, let’s not forget Benque Viejo United, who are at 11 points, and also have the same aspirations.
