BREAKING: Tropical Storm Lisa expected to become hurricane, will hit near Dangriga Wednesday night

By Aaron Humes: As of 6 a.m., Tropical Storm Lisa remains at 40 miles per hour, moving west at 14 miles per hour, and is presently located just south by east of Belize City, 480 miles away.

According to Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon, the storm is expected to make landfall near Dangriga on Wednesday night, but it is reminded that storm conditions will exist countrywide and outside the cone of landfall.

The rainfall totals have been lifted slightly to three to five inches for Wednesday and Thursday, more in some localities, with flooding and a storm surge of three to five feet, described as dangerous and liable to cause drowning.

NEMO Coordinator Shelton Defour called on Belizeans to voluntarily evacuate from likely to be affected areas especially along the coast as soon as possible. Shelters will be open on an as-needed basis at the district and community level and test runs have been done. He noted that Lisa is likely to follow the path, though not exact, of Hurricanes Richard (2010), Earl (2016) and most recently Nana (2020), which all hit between Belize City and Dangriga.

Defour further advises that movement on Wednesday should be minimal – only for emergency situations and ideally not to evacuate to a shelter.
