P.M. John Briceño heads south for Garifuna Settlement Day

Posted: Friday, November 18, 2022. 7:27 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño is headed south, like many of us, in anticipation of Garifuna Settlement Day.

His office said that today, Friday, he will be meeting with community leaders, alcaldes, students, and residents of the Toledo District before traveling to Dangriga.

On Saturday, he will be in the Culture Capital to participate in official ceremonies with our Garifuna community.

Dangriga is the traditional site for official national ceremonies to mark Garifuna Settlement Day, starting with the re-enactment of the Garifuna arrival to the Belize Settlement in 1823, a church service at the seat of the municipal Catholic parish, followed by a parade to the main grounds for ceremonies and an official parade following thereafter. It is preceded by drumming throughout the night in all municipalities with a Garifuna population.
