By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ecuador rallied after falling behind and pulled a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the third World Cup game on Friday at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan in front of 44,833 fans.
The Netherlands got on the scoreboard very early when Cody Gakpo put the ball beyond Hernán Galíndez in the sixth minute.
But the South American side, playing a high intensity game, drew even in the 49th minute off a pass by Pervis Estupiñán.
Valencia, Ecuador’s lead scorer in World Cups, now has six, having converted the two on opening day in their 2-0 win over Qatar. He is followed by Agustín Delgado, who has three.
With both squads now at 4 points atop Group A, the 1-1 draw favoured the Netherlands more as their next rival is Qatar, who have lost their first two matches, while Ecuador will have a tougher time against Senegal, who today tripled up on Qatar 3-1. All bets have the Netherlands qualifying with a win over Qatar, and Ecuador squaring off with Senegal for the second ticket to the Round of 16.
The Netherlands-Qatar match is set for Tuesday, November 29 at 9:00 am at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor while Ecuador battle Senegal at the same time at the Khalifa Stadium where they played today
The final game today Friday pits the United States against England at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium.
