By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Morocco downed Belgium 2-0 in yet another shocker in the 2022 FFA World Cup at the Al Thumama Stadium packed with 43,738 fans in Doha.
Morocco thought they had taken the lead on a long shot from the left side by Hakim Ziyech two minutes into injury time (45’+2’) at the end of the first half, but the Video Assistant Referee considered Romain Saiss was offside. After the video check, referee César Arturo Ramos ruled off the goal.
But today the African side were to take down the number two ranked team in the world.
In the 73rd, Abdelhamid Sabiri converted from a free kick taken close to the corner flag, shocking goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sparking wild celebrations at the Stadium and in Morocco.
Belgium pressed forward in an effort to level the score, but it was Morocco again in the second minute of injury time (90’+2’) who would shake the net through a Zakaria Aboukhlal goal on a counterattack off a pass by Ziyech.
That completed the 2-0 shocker leaving Belgium reeling with only one point and sending Morocco to the top of the group with four points.
The other two Group F teams, Croatia against Canada, play at 10:00 am at the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan.
The final game today features Germany challenging Spain after being shocked by Japan in their first game. The Group E match kicks off at 1:00 pm at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.
Earlier today, Costa Rica stung Japan 1-0 in Group E.
