By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Uruguay played their best game at the 2022 FIFA World Cup beating Ghana 2-0 at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah in front of 43,443 fans but were eliminated because they scored less goals than South Korea who defeated Portugal 2-1 in injury time.

However, more than South Korea, Uruguay feel they were eliminated by German referee Daniel Siebert who didn’t call a penalty kick even after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Siebert had also not called two other questionable fouls, deemed penalty kicks, in the Ghana defensive area earlier.

Two goals by Georgian de Arrascaeta put Uruguay ahead in the first half but in the end, they were not enough leaving captain Luis Suárez, who played a superb game with two assists, and the entire Uruguay team and country crying because of their unfortunate dismissal.

Ghana could have gone ahead in the 21st minute but captain Andre Ayew missed a penalty kick following a foul by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet against Kudus Mohammed. Ayew took too long and when he did his shot was rather soft. Rochet read it well and scooped it out.

Ayew might have been hounded by the penalty kick misses against Uruguay at the South Africa 2010 World Cup after a Suarez handball at the end of extra-time.

Uruguay followed up with the two Arrascaeta goals to put the game away.  In the 26th minute, Arrascaeta headed the ball in by the right post finishing off a shot by Suárez that goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi had diverted. Then, in the 32nd minute, Arrascaeta hammered in a cross from Suárez to put Uruguay ahead 2-0.

Thereafter, Uruguay controlled the pace of the match but couldn’t add another goal. In the end, goal shortage, having failed to score in their first two games, cost them a ticket to the Round of 16.

Uruguay totalled four points, the same as South Korea, but were eliminated by the Asian team on number of goals. Their goal difference locked at 0, South Korea went ahead as they scored 4 goals while allowing 4 because Uruguay only scored 2 while permitting 2. Ghana finished in last place with three points.

South Korea go on to face Group G winners, expected to be Brazil, on Monday, December 5 while Portugal, as Group H winners with six points, will play Group G runners up on Tuesday, December 6. Uruguay and Ghana will be watching from home.
