The United States, the only CONCACAF team that made it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s Round of 16, was eliminated 3-1 by the Netherlands on Saturday morning.
In front of 44,846 fans at the Khalifa International Stadium, the United States put up a gallant fight but succumbed to the Dutch effectiveness. Defensive lapses by the United States provided the Netherlands with three open opportunities which the Dutch capitalized on to go through the quarterfinals.
The three Dutch goals were converted when the United States was playing its best ball.
The United States started pressing from the get-go, but were stopped cold in the 10th minute when Memphis Depay hammered past goalkeeper Matt Turner. That was Depay’s 22nd goal in 25 games for the Netherlands.
The United States continued pressing and had a total possession of 56% by the half, but just before referee Wilton Sampaio blew the end of the first period, Daley Blind netted the second goal in the 45’+1’ much the same way as Depay’s strike finishing a cross from the right.
The United States didn’t give up and kept pushing forward and got rewarded in the 76th minute when substitute DeAndre Yedlin crossed into the penalty area. The ball hit Haji Wright on his foot and looped over the Dutch keeper into the far-left corner for the 2-1 score.
But the United States’ push was again nullified by a final goal when Denzel Dumfries struck a volley into the net off a cross from Blind.
3-1 and the Netherlands go through. The United States go home.
The Netherlands will play the winners of the Argentina-Australia game in the quarterfinals.
