By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi lifted the World Cup after winning the Final 4-2 in penalty kicks over France. The Final had to be decided in a penalty kick shootout after an intense 3-3 extra time draw.

Messi scored a brace while France’s Kylian Mbappé converted a hat trick, twice catching up with Argentina. Angel Di María scored Argentina’s other goal.

Argentina captured three of the four individual awards with Messi winning the Golden Ball on being named the 2022 FIFA World Cup MVP. Damián Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez won the Golden Glove as best goalkeeper and Enzo Fernández captured the best Young Player award.

Mbappé, who scored eight goals, won the Golden Boot as the tournament top scorer. He was followed by Messi with seven.

Croatia won third place on Saturday defeating Morocco 2-1.
