By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, U.S. officials said that the U.S. Government could impose new COVID-19 measures on travelers from China over concerns about the “lack of transparent data”, Reuters report.
The discussion comes after Japan, India and Malaysia announced rules on travelers from China in the last 24 hours due to a surge in COVID-19 infections.
Travelers from China to Japan now have to present a negative COVID-19 test and Malaysia implemented additional tracking and surveillance measures.
“There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing COVID-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC,” the officials said.
Hospitals and medical professionals in China are overwhelmed as the virus continues to spread rapidly.
Data from China showed only 1 COVID-19 death in 7 days fueling doubts among health experts about the statistics.
Data from a UK-based health data firm estimates that China is facing over a million COVID-19 infections and about 5,000 deaths daily.
