John Saldivar hosts first campaign meeting, plots “restoring the transformation of Belmopan”

By Aaron Humes: Candidate to be standard-bearer for the United Democratic Party in Belmopan, John Saldivar, has publicly thanked those who attended the first campaign meeting held on Tuesday night.

On social media, former representative Saldivar wrote, “The outpouring of support from the many volunteers is heartwarming. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Together we will put Belmopan back on track.”

He added that the convention’s scheduled date, February 5, “is the first step to restoring the transformation of Belmopan,” though no specific details of his campaign platform have been produced thus far.

Saldivar is being challenged by businessman Emil Torres and former Government CEO and soldier George Lovell, after successfully persuading a narrow majority of the UDP National Party Council to overturn a vote of a designated special committee reviewing his potential candidacy in December.

Saldivar remains under designation by the U.S. Department of State over charges of bribery in the facilitation of Immigration services and improper use of state assets, specifically a boat donated by the Americans to the Coast Guard, which he has repeatedly denied and sought to explain away. The designation bars him from entering the United States and extends to his immediate family.
