International News: 6-year-old boy detained after shooting teacher in U.S.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Law enforcement authorities say that a 6-year-old boy is detained after shooting his teacher in Virginia, U.S., BBC reports.

The shooting occurred on Friday afternoon at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport

At this time, authorities believe that it was not an accidental shooting.

The teacher was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting occurred in the teacher’s first grade classroom after an altercation between the teacher and the student.

Police say that the child used a handgun and are investigating where the child got the firearm. 

School District superintendent, Dr. George Parker said that something like this should never occur.

“This is terrible, something like this should never occur. We want to ensure nothing like this happens again,” he said.

“We need the community’s support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth and I’m sounding like a broken record today, because I continue to reiterate that: that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people,” the superintendent added.
