Special Envoy’s Wonder Woman is Special Education Officer, Myra Arzu Coleman

Posted: Wednesday, January 11, 2023. 9:49 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The special envoy for the development of families and children, Rossana Briceno features outstanding Belizean women making a difference in Belize every week.

Today’s feature is on Myra Arzu Coleman. Myra is a Special Education Officer at the Special Education Unit in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology in Belize City.

She has served as an educator for the past 26 years both at the primary and secondary levels.

Her passion to teach began when she discovered her ability to reach even the slowest learner in the classroom. It took many training sessions and the right mindset to support all learners in her care.

Myra is a purpose-driven educator rather than a performance-driven one.

Prior to taking the role of Special Education Officer in 2014, she was an English and Literature teacher and for a short period Head of the English Department at Maud Williams High School in Belize City.

She was also an English and Literature teacher at Toledo Community College in Punta Gorda Town and a standard 3 and 4 teacher at Silver Creek Primary School in Toledo District.

Myra’s greatest inspirations are her grandmother Mauri Francisco Cayetano and her mother Yolanda Arzu. They are both warrior women; her grandmother migrated to Belize with 4 children.  She was in search of a better life for her family and worked so hard for a pittance to put food on the table. With all her trials and tribulation, she kept her faith in God.

“These women have taught me that life is filled with challenges but never quit, push forward, be humble, be yourself, respect, be responsible and most of all, show love,” Myra says.

Myra emphasized that her accomplishments were given through God’s grace:” I am what I am by God’s grace, and God’s grace hasn’t been for nothing. In fact, I have worked harder than all the others—that is, it wasn’t me but the grace of God that is with me” 1 Corinthians 15:10. When God’s grace is sufficient, success is imminent.

Myra is a single mother of 3 lovely children and has 1 grandson.

Myra holds an Associate degree in General Studies from Saint John’s Junior College, a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from the University of Belize, and a Master’s degree in Inclusive and Special Education from the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Jamaica.
