“The Shyne story:” documentary, film, book in works with Walt Disney Pictures

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has announced a deal with Walt Disney Pictures and subsidiary ESPN/Andscape to produce a series of biographical works on his life story.

To be fair, it is an incredible one: from the heights of a record deal with Bad Boy Entertainment and multiple platinum-selling records and Grammy Awards, to the lows of a ten-year prison sentence for an indiscriminate shooting in a New York nightclub and deportation to Belize, to becoming a member of Parliament and leader of the Official Opposition.

But the Shyne story, the Leader insists, is just as much the Belize story, and Disney will be the ones to tell it: “I am talking about when Walt Disney puts out a movie, it is an event. They sell to the world; they don’t just sell even to American audiences which is a couple hundred million people. So certainly, what I will be selling is not just Shyne. The story of Shyne began on Curassow Street and it continues right here in all of the districts and every bit of Belize. So, there is no Shyne story without the Belize story. So definitely people will get to see all the different parts of Belize that impacted my life and certainly as the next prime minister that means the entire country.”

A hoped-for by-product of the work is bringing more exposure to Belize for tourism and so on – Belizean products, Belizean services, hotels, accommodations and so on.

According to Barrow, “…the documentary will be executive produced by DJ Khaled and Roc Nation so stay tuned, we will begin production here in Belize in the spring and we look for a 2024 summer release.”

As for who plays Shyne himself, he suggested Michael B. Jordan, star of the “Creed” series with Sylvester Stallone, but no word on whether there will be roles for potential Belizean actors or others associated with the production.
