International News: Chinese pray for health in Lunar New Year 

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, China welcomed the celebration of the Lunar New Year with people praying for good health, Reuters report.

Health officials in China reported almost 13,000 COVID-19 deaths between January 13 and 19, 2023.

Residents made long lines outside the iconic Lama temple in Beijing with people waiting their turn to pray for their loved ones.

Meanwhile, experts in the country say that the wave of COVID-19 infections across the country has already peaked and there is now a decline in hospitalizations.

The death toll report comes amidst concerns over Beijing’s data transparency.

Last month, China abandoned its zero-covid policy and since then, the country has experienced a surge in COVID-19 infections.

Experts are also concerned that the mass movement of people during the Lunar New Year holiday could fuel another COVID-19 wave.
