By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Out of the eight teams qualified for the Orange Walk Football Association’s (OWFA) First Division Championship Quarterfinals, five are from Group A and just three from Group B.
Rather than using the standard four from each group, the OWFA opted for an unusual format in which the first two from each group (San Antonio and Caribbean Rum Boyz from Group A and San Jose Pumas and Progresso from Group B) qualified outright to the quarterfinals. However, for the remaining four spots, Team 3 from one group had to play Team Six from the other and Teams 4 and 5 had to do likewise. So, Guinea Grass, San Jose, and Mi Gente qualified from Group A and Louisiana qualified from Group B.
These final spots were decided on Sunday at the Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk Town. Guinea Grass ran over the Red Devils 6-0, San Jose pounded Trinidad 5-1, Mi Gente slipped past Charlie’s Cave Tubing 4-3, and Louisiana eliminated Palmar 5-3 in a penalty kicks shootout after a 0-0 draw.
The Quarterfinals kick off on Sunday at the Louisiana Football Field.
