Explaining the hike: Prime Minister John Briceño addresses criticism of transport allowance increase

Posted: Sunday, February 5, 2023. 4:22 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceño, has defended the recent significant increase of his transport allowance from 1,350 dollars to 4,000 dollars per month.

He says that he chose to buy his own vehicle rather than burden the Government with providing him with one.

He argued that the repairs for his vehicle are high due to his frequent travels all over the country, which would have cost the Government more than 4,000 dollars a month if they were to provide him a vehicle and pay for its repairs.

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize criticized the increase but the Prime Minister insists his expenses on personal vehicle ownership and maintenance justify the increase.
