Amidst the Kirk Smith Jr controversy, the Belize Elite Basketball League goes into Week 3 with games on Friday night in Belmopan, Belize City

Amidst the controversy between the Digi Belize City Defenders and the Belize Hurricanes over Kirk Smith Jr who signed to play with both teams, the Belize Elite Basketball League goes into Week 3 of the 2023 season with games in Belize City and Belmopan on Friday night and Punta Gorda and Orange Walk on Saturday night.

The Digi Belize City Defenders, with a 2-0 record, take on the Western Ballaz, who are also 2-0, at the Belize City Civic Center in the hottest game starting at 9:00 pm tonight.

In the Capital, the Belmopan Red Tigaz (0-1) host the Griga Dream Ballers (1-1), who are coming off a sizzling 82-81 win over the Orange Walk Running Rebels last week in Dangriga. The game tips off at 8:00 pm at the UB Gymnasium in Belmopan.

Then on Saturday, the Orange Walk Running Rebels (0-2) will attempt to redeem themselves against the Belize Hurricanes (2-0). While the Appeals Committee ruled that Smith’s only valid contract is with the Hurricanes, they should be able to field him, but five owners, who this week opposed that decision, maintain that he is still suspended for a year. The BEBL is expected to meet early next week to rule on the matter which has caused quite a stir, or should we say storm, in the Belize basketball world.

The game is set for 9:30 pm at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex.

Half an hour earlier, the Punta Gorda Panthers (0-2) are tipping off their game at the PG Sporting Complex against the defending champions, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks (0-1). While both are in dire need of a win, a loss for the home side will sink them to 0-3, so expect them to come out pumping against a San Pedro side that cannot afford to go down again.
