Westrac’s Wasani Castro wins 58-mile Stage 1 of Digi Valentine Cycling Tour

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wasani Castro of the Westrac Alliance Cycling Team won the 58-mile first stage of the Digi Valentine Cycling Tour on Saturday morning.

Castro edged Shervin Budna of Team FAL in a heated sprint to the finish line by Digi Mirab in Belize City on Saturday morning.

The first stage was a 58-mile Road Race which started at 8:00 am at Constitution Park in Belize City, leading out to Leslie’s Imports on the George Price Highway, on to Mile 25, back to Hattieville where it headed to Data Pro via the Burrell Boom Road, and then extended to Digi Mirab via the Philip Goldson Highway.

Henry Li of the Rolling Shattaz finished in third position and Carlton Robinson rode in fourth as they led the main field.

Organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize under the International Cycling Union regulations, the Digi Valentine’s Cycling Tour consists of three stages for six different categories: Elite, U23, Masters, Women, Junior, and Youths.

The second stage, a 3.6-mile Individual Time Trial, will be run this afternoon. The time trial starts at 2:00 pm by the Philip Goldson International Airport on the John Smith Road that connects the airport with the George Price Highway. From the start points it runs 3.6 miles to the National Championship finish line near the Western Pines entrance.

The third and final stage, the 100-mile Road Race, will be run on Sunday. The stage starts and finishes at Leslie’s Imports. The main race starts at 9:30 am and will cover the following route twice. From the start at Leslie’s the race heads to Data Pro via Hattieville, returns to the Faber’s Road Roundabout where it makes a U-turn to Data Pro. From there it returns to finish in front of Leslie’s Imports.

The Juniors/Youth and Women will race the same route once for 51 miles. The Junior/Youth start at 10:00 am and the Women 10:05 am.
