57 teams are competing in the Belikin Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge that’s already underway

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fifty-seven teams are out on the Belize River competing in the four-day 175-mile Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge that got underway on Friday morning.

Starting at 7:00 am under the Hawkesworth Bridge on the Macal River in San Ignacio, the 25th edition of the Ruta Maya Challenge soon gets on the Belize River at Branch Mouth where the Macal joins the Mopan to firm the Belize River and the paddlers make their way to Belize City where they finish on Monday.

Team PACT, comprising Amado Cruz, Jerry Cante, and Daniel Cruz, swept the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge last year winning all four stages and are again participating aiming for a third straight win.

Sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) won the race last year after a hiatus in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stage 1 goes from the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio to Banana Bank on Friday, March 3.

Stage 2 heads from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage on Saturday, March 4.

The Third Stage takes off at Double Head Cabbage and finishes at Henderson’s Bank in Burrell Boom on Sunday, March 5.

The final Stage 4 comes on Monday, March 6, from Burrell Boom to Belize City finishing by the Belize City Centre.

Slim & Trim like Guava Limb, comprising Andres Cabb Jr, Daniel Cruz Jr, and Javier Guardado, were second in 2022 followed by Belize Coast Guard, made up of Wilberto Daniels, Kenrick Daniels, and Daniel Gregorio, in third place.
