By Benjamin Flowers: Parish members of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Little Hocking, Ohio, USA, have built 13 houses in Belize to assist families in need, and are planning to do even more.
A segment called “This is Home” aired on the NBC-affiliate station WTAP, yesterday, and highlighted that the mission team from St. Ambrose recently returned from Belize after building the 13th house.
According to parish member Rita Rodgers, the initiative originated from a request coming from the Sisters of Charity in Nazareth several years ago. Rogers said that it was the Sisters of Charity that requested assistance building a house for a needy family in Belize, so she took the idea back to the parish, and members readily volunteered.
“We have a house blessing at the end of the house build, and the people always cry. They just are so grateful. They just have nothing. A lot of them just have a curtain and a little wooden area where they have a shower, and now they have a bathroom. In fact, the last house that was built down there, one of the guys had to go back and show the lady how to flush the toilet and turn the shower on, because she had never experienced that before,” Rogers said.
