By Benjamin Flowers: Belizeans are outraged after Mexican news outlet the Cancun Sun used photos of Belize’s Great Blue Hole for an article about a new blue hole being found in Chetumal.

The article titled “New Discovery: Chetumal Is Officially Home To The World’s Second-Largest Blue Hole,” which was published on March 5, explains that there is a newly discovered ‘deep water’ hole, Taam Ja’, in the Bay of Chetumal.

“Located in the Chetumal Bay, this deep blue hole was found on the Chetumal Bay’s seabed and reportedly stretches across an area of 147,358 square feet and is approximately 900 feet deep, with its mouth at a depth of around 15-16.5 feet below sea level. The hole was aptly named Taam Ja’, which translates as ‘deep water’ in one of the major Mayan languages spoken in the region,” the article said.

However, in the article, two images of Belize’s Great Blue Hole are featured without making the distinction that the images are of Belize.

Belizeans have since begun commenting on the article voicing their displeasure with the error and are calling for the Cancun Sun to either label the pictures properly or remove them from the story altogether.
